When you buy an iPhone 4 off
the shelf, it comes with an application known as FaceTime included right inside
it. FaceTime is a video conferencing app, and although it works great, with
excellent features, it does have its limitations like being unable to work with
other smart phone OS systems or communicate with them. Furthermore, FaceTime
doesn't work on 3G networks. These are all aside from the fact that some people
just prefer different video conferencing apps; they don't like one and want
some variety.
Because of this, it's not a
bad idea to download any one of several other third party video calling apps
that can be installed on your iPhone. Some of these contain their own unique
features that make them even better than FaceTime.
Fring Video Conferencing app
This excellent little app is one of the first that became popular
over iOS in the earlier days. With Fring you can download the app into either
an iOS system or onto Android smart phone platforms. What this means is that
you don't need to worry about your friends owning their own iPhone to have a
free face to face long distance chat. Fring lets you enjoy conference calls
between up to 4 different people and despite all this is completely free and
easy to download and install.
Tango Video Calling
Tango Video Calling
With Tango Video Calling, you get access to free video chat, free
text messaging and free video messages over the Tango network. The service also
works on 3G, 4G or even Wi-Fi networks. Tango is perfectly compatible for
iPhones, Android based phones and numerous other brands of smart phone, making
it easy for you to get your friends interested in installing this free app.
Best of all, Tango lets you create accounts in seconds and without needing to
create a login profile. This and its extremely simple usability make it ideal
for use amongst your less tech savvy family members or friends.
ooVoo
Video Chat
Another free iPhone compatible app that's easy to download,
install and use. ooVoo is particularly versatile in that it lets you share your
face time with up to 12 other callers simultaneously; a feature that
outdistances many other video conferencing apps. ooVoo is also available for
use in the iPod Touch and even the iPad. The social networking features built
into ooVoo also let you find your Facebook or Twitter friends that share the
same app and contact them.
Yahoo! Instant Messenger
Yahoo! Instant Messenger
Aside from the downside of having to open a Yahoo account, this
iPhone compatible app is actually pretty good for the video conferencing and a
number of other features it has. With the Messenger app, you can send free sms
messages, make free video calls, free voice calls and even send video messages.
The app is compatible with most smart phone operating systems and models, and
since most people already have a Yahoo! Account, it's easy for you to contact
your friends without requesting that they download something.
Skype
Skype
The most famous video chat and video conferencing app of them all, Skype
is free, it's used by many people and it's easy to use. With Skype you can have
decent to high quality (depending on connection strength) video conferences or
chats. Skype allows free Skype to Skype video calling and will also let your
call land or cellular lines almost anywhere in the world at very reasonable
rates. The multiplatform versatility and popularity of Skype make it possible
to use it for chats and conferences between friends working on an iPhone,
Android OS, Mac or Windows machine.
